Horizon

Curriculum Intent:

The Horizons 14-19 curriculum is built around the needs of our learners with an emphasis on engagement, developing independence and preparation for adulthood. The curriculum is accessed by learners who are working from Pre-Entry to Level 1.

The intention is to provide learners who are working in the explorer’s pathway are to be life-long learners who can flourish as independently as possible in society. We intend to expose learners to a variety of subjects and experiences to inspire and motivate. We will provide learners with the skills to communicate their thoughts, feelings, wants and needs to enable them to be empowered to make choices; acquire knowledge of subjects and concepts to promote creativity, forward thinking and an understanding of morals. We have developed a pedagogy and curriculum which meets the diverse nature of our learners with complex needs. Our sensory curriculum has communication and sensory at its heart. These core strands allow our learners to develop a more holistic approach to their learning.

The intent of the curriculum for learners working at Entry Level 1 and above is to support our learners to work towards achieving a range of academic and vocational qualifications, whilst also developing life skills and experience needed to support independence when leaving Tettenhall Wood, including preparation for the world of work, further education or supported independence.

Curriculum Implementation:

For many learners in the explorer’s pathway, they will gain knowledge and skills not only in set subjects but throughout the school day, for example, applying mathematical skills in cooking, communication skills in PE, scientific skills in life skills and promoting independence in community studies and therefore cross-curricular links are encouraged and carefully promoted to facilitate retention.

Learners in the developer’s pathway will have a varied timetable, including core subjects of English, Maths, PSHE and ICT, coupled with options. Learners have the opportunity to work towards Arts Award and Duke of Edinburgh as part of our enrichment offer.

Curriculum planning supports a rolling programme and ensures that learners are offered mastery tasks to expand their knowledge of subjects. Learners are offered opportunities to visit local further education providers or day care facilities to support their transition and will annually attend the local authority Preparing For Adulthood Event to explore their future options.

Curriculum Impact:

Learners in the explorer’s pathway will work towards ASDAN Transition Challenge in KS4 . In Post 16 learners will work towards ASDAN Personal Progress which are national recognised qualifications equating that provide learners with a curriculum to encourage life skills, preparation for work and community participation.

For the Developers their curriculum focuses on academic or vocational qualifications will have the best possible start to access further education or the working world. KS4 learners will be working towards a range of Entry Level Certificate so that they can access GCSE should this be appropriate to the level that they are working at. Post 16 learners, will work towards functional skills at entry level alongside BTEC and Employability qualifications. This will support the transition to the adult world beyond Tettenhall Wood at the end of year 14 and provide them with the knowledge and skills to apply functional learning to their next placement.
